Psychiatry School

The aim of the Psychiatry School is to organize a regular training program in the field of psychosomatic psychiatry in Russia, as well as to train of psychiatrists and clinical psychologists to use of pharmacotherapy in somatic practice and international standards of psychosocial support and rehabilitation of patients with severe psychosomatic illnesses and their families.

In the Russian medical postgraduate education there is no training programs in the field of psychosomatic psychiatry, which is the part of the standard program of medical assistance for patients in Europe and the United States. That is why the Psychiatry School was established by EMC Medical School and European Medical Center.

The lack of early detection and treatment of comorbid psychiatric disorders of somatic patients, lack of psychological and emotional support results in reduce of life quality of patients and their families, reduce of noncompliance, nonobservance in medical disposal, side effects of therapy and the decrease of the effectiveness of treatment.

Head of the Psychiatry School is Natalia Rivkina – psychiatrist, head of the Psychiatry and Psychotherapy Clinic of the European Medical Center.

Goals of the Psychiatry School:

  1. Teaching professionals (doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses) the fundamentals of pharmacological treatment of comorbid psycho-social disorders and informing them of programs of psycho-social support for patients and their families in order to reduce distress and enhance their quality of life.
  2. Formation of a group of specialists, who can boost the educational programs on-site. The purpose of which is to train the clinicians to use an integrative approach in psychiatry, apply effective interaction techniques when treating patients  and  provide psychological and emotional support to the patients and their families.

The Psychiatry School is aimed at developing a regular educational program in Russia in Psychosomatic Psychiatry, teaching psychiatrists and psychologists world standards of psycho-social support and rehabilitation of the patients and their families.

There is a great need for such a school in Russia as the Russian postgraduate medical education system has no educational programs in this sphere that employs an integrative approach to somatic practices, which are now the standard for the treatment of patients in the USA and Europe.

The late diagnosis and treatment of comorbid psychological disorders in oncology and no psycho-emotional support, make the lives of patients and their families even harder. These factors also have a negative impact on medication compliance and treatment adherence, and cause intolerance towards the therapy side effects, thereby decreasing, the overall efficacy of the treatment .

Training courses are delivered by the specialists in their own spheres together with the International Psycho-Oncology Society (IPOS) and the European Association of Psychosomatic Medicine (EAPM), and comply with international recommendations for educational programs in this medical sphere.
