Effective Communication Skills Training

Effective communication is one of the main goals in building up therapeutic relationships. When patient’s needs and fears are well-known it is quite possible to make a shared decision about further treatment. Effective Communication Training is a means of mastering skills that significantly increase clinical aspects of treatment and make possible to provide high quality healthcare. Effective communication skills correlate with patient’s higher treatment satisfaction, awareness of different aspects of disease and treatment; increase treatment adherence, disease outcome; decrease level of anxiety of a patient and his/her family.

Over the course of patient’s needs in communication with physician clinical studies it was highlighted that patients told about unsatisfied needs in discussing stage of disease, tumor expansion, prognosis, potential treatment, its effectiveness and side effects. It conforms with earlier researches that demonstrated the occurrence of communication difficulties between clinician and a patient in 84-94% of cases.

When clinician shows the understanding of patient’s needs his level of anxiety significantly decreases. Moreover, studies showed relationship between psychosocial factors and onset of remission through psychoemotional coping with disease stress, confidence in clinician and treatment compliance.

Thus, patient-oriented communication is an important factor of disease prognosis improvement.
